Gordon teenager on sports awards shortlist
VOTING in the Borders Sport and Leisure Celebration of Sport Awards sponsored by GB Telecom closes on Thursday, February 28, and Berwickshire residents are being urged to make sure they have their say before it’s too late.
Several of the Award winners will be decided by public vote and amongst the shortlisted contenders is young Berwickshire sailor, 17-year-old Callum Airlie.
Callum, who was chosen by double Olympic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson to help to light the Olympic cauldron at the 2012 Games opening ceremony, is a two-time Optimist UK National Champion. He trains at East Lothian Yacht Club.
The other nominees in the Inspirational Performance category are paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg and show jumper Scott Brash.
The GB Telecom Borders Sport and Leisure celebration of Sport Awards features a total of ten categories.
An expert judging panel will select the winners of seven awards whilst the other three will be decided by public vote.
The other two categories open for public vote are Sports Personality of the Year where the nominees are Scott Brash, Chris Paterson and Ryan Mania and Team of the Year with the shortlisted contenders comprising Galashiels RFC, Peebles Netball Club and the Borders Elite Swim Team.
All of the winners will be revealed at a special evening ceremony at the MacDonald Cardrona Hotel on Friday March 1.
The event will be hosted by renowned BBC TV presenter and sports journalist Alison Walker.
