CHIRNSIDE knew they were in for a tough game taking on a Hawick Utd side that was undefeated since September, but the A Division team held out for a victory on penalties to progress to the Quarter Finals of the South Cup.
The home team made a good start to the game and deservedly took the lead ten minutes in when Blaikie cracked a half volley into the corner of the net. It wasn’t long before number two was added; this time Blaikie was fouled on the edge of the box and Young drove the resulting free-kick into the bottom corner.
A lapse in concentration at the back led to a goal for the away side when a long free-kick was floated into the box and an unmarked Hawick defender headed it across goal for the midfielder to shoot past Todd. Chirnside’s two goal cushion was soon restored - a marauding run by Young was rewarded when his cross come shot appeared to evade everyone in the box to nestle in the far corner of the net. But with the half drawing to a close the away side pulled another goal back.
Purves and Condy had chances to kill the game off in the second half but both efforts went agonisingly wide. The longer the game went on the more dangerous Hawick became and it was no surprise when their striker scored the equaliser with a neat finish from a tight angle with only a few minutes left of regular time to play.
In extra time A. Turner thought he had scored but his effort went inches wide. Into the second half though the Chirnside striker made no mistake this time firing home from close range for what everyone thought was going to be the winner. Hawick had other ideas and with only a few minutes left to play their striker completed his hat-trick with an easy finish following a pass across the face of the goal. Kelly, Turner, Morrison and Young converted the penalties for the home side with Hawick missing the target with one and Todd saving the other as the home side eventually scraped through to the next round where they will take on Ancrum.
