Duns second string run in eight tries

Duns 2nd XV 54

Musselburgh 3rd XV 5

Duns 2nds entertained Musselburgh 3rds under the lights at Castle Park on Friday evening in BT Reserve League East Division 3.

Musselburgh arrived with only 10 players, although many teams in their position would simply have called off with the result that none of the players from either side would have had a game. Duns had 18 players at their disposal and in the spirit of fair play they loaned four players to the visitors so the match started with 14v14.

There were some fine individual performances from the Duns players who had Musselburgh on the back foot from the start. Michael Burns looked fitter and more aggressive than ever, Al Hamilton kicked intelligently and Euan Reed, Matty Taylor and Frazer Howie all showed up well.

Stewart Calder scored a fine try with a scrum pick up and hand off to score in the corner and Nathan Chisholm scored a peach in the second half from a line out when he touched down between the posts.

Musselburgh were reduced to 13 players when a flanker went off injured in the first half but parity in numbers was restored when William Smillie - taking an enforced break from playing for Greenlaw FC - pulled on his boots to help the visitors. His introduction to rugby was completed when he scored Musselburgh’s only points of the evening!

The Duns points came from eight tries by Stewart Calder (2), Alex Orr (2), Al Hamilton, Nathan Chisholm, Euan Reed and Jamie Thompson, with Al Hamilton kicking seven out of eight conversions.
