DUNS Colts travelled to Lothian Park in Jedburgh to face Jed Thistle in the Semi Junior League on Saturday.
After a disastrous start, in which they conceded three tries in the opening 15 minutes, they competed on equal terms with their hosts, outscoring them in the final hour of the game.
Duns kicked off with the breeze and light drizzle at their backs, but from the start seemed to be out of sorts. Tackles were misssed, scrums were lost against the head and wrong options were taken, and this allowed the much bigger Jed forwards to take control of the game. By the time 15 minutes had elapsed the home side had registered three tries, with one converted, to give them the lead by 17-0.
At last stung into action, the Duns pack upped their game and began to secure more possession for their backs. The scrum tightened up, and the tackling became much more robust with Jed frequently spilling the ball in contact.
From a Duns scrum near the halfway line, Iain Sim took the ball at pace, brushed aside two tacklers and outstripped the defence to score close to the corner. Dom Ginn kicked a super conversion from out wide.
Unfortunately for Duns, Jed scored a converted try almost immediately from the restart and were ahead by 22-7 at the break.
Another Jed try with only five minutes of the half gone opened up a 20 point gap for the home side, but from then on Duns were clearly the better team.
First Iain Sim scored his second try - this time too far out for the conversion attempt - and with five minutes remaining Dylan Renton powered his way over from a prop forward’s favourite distance for the third Duns score. Dom Ginn converted to leave the final score at 27-19 to Jed.
The Duns youngsters are a work in progress, but will improve and will win more matches as the season progresses. A stronger belief in their own and their team-mates’ abilities, and being switched on to the match from the kick off will surely help in that process.
Duns are due to play Berwick Colts at Berwickshire High School this Saturday, October 20. Kick off is at 3pm - please try to get along to support the team.
