Over 115 coaches from across the region, including 17 young coaches, attended this year’s Borders Sports and Leisure Coaching Conference held in Galashiels on Sunday.

The conference, featuring a key note speech by Scotland rugby coach, Scott Johnson, also included expert-led workshops across seven different sporting disciplines: athletics, cycling, football, hockey, rugby, swimming and tennis.

In his presentation, Scott Johnson stressed that coaches should see themselves as being in the “people business” and highlighted how his values, particularly those linked to his own family life, have influenced his coaching style. He also encouraged the coaches to look at examples of when “people have not quite got things right” and to use these to help to improve and develop rather than always trying to emulate successes.
