Ashworth injured as Bandits crash

Glasgow Tigers 56, Berwick Bandits 35: Berwick went down to a heavy defeat at Glasgow on Sunday when they also lost number one rider Ricky Ashworth, who was forced to withdraw from the meeting with an aggravated back injury.

Ian Rae, Berwick’s team manager, said: “Yeah, disappointing sums this afternoon up, especially as we’re now sitting back waiting news on Ricky Ashworth again as he’s aggravated his back injury, but that aside our delight in signing Lubos Tomicek continued with him taking two good wins and eight good points. All-in-all it was a one to forget.”

Following a home maximum in heat one, Lubos Tomicek expertly took heat two for his own with a startling gate, and with Alex Edberg keeping Robert Ksiezak at bay, the Berwick reserves levelled proceedings at 6-6.

With the scores still tied 12-12 after four a first bend domino effect in heat five saw both Glasgow’s Jayden O’ Malley and Berwick’s number one Ricky Ashworth clatter into the fence. Both returned to the pits on their own two feet, but immediately O’ Malley was withdrawn with a broken knuckle.

Ashworth took his place in the re-run, but retired from the event showing signs that he may have aggravated his back injury picked up at Newcastle three weeks earlier, and eventually he too was withdrawn.

Heat wins for Tomicek in the eighth and Sebastian Alden in Heat Nine held the score tight at 30-24, but that’s where the match took a sharp turn against Berwick with a 5-0 to Glasgow in Heat 10 for Joe Screen and Mason Campton over David Bellego who fell and retired on lap one before skipper Lee Complin spun 360 degrees half way through lap three.

A further 5-1 in the 11th put the Bandits 40-25 down allowing Ian Rae to use a tactical ride in the shape of Complin, but is fine second place could only net four points in a shared 4-4 moving the score to 44-29, with worse to come with Glasgow finishing off with a maximum in 13, a share of the spoils in 14, expertly won by Bellego and a Tigers 4-2 to finish ending the match a disappointing away defeat 56-35.
