Duns Park’s Stuart Angus claimed the Berwickshire Singles title on Finals day, after a hotly contested match with Robert Patterson of Chirnside.

The Berwickshire Finals for 2011 took place at Eyemouth Bowling Club on Sunday, August 21.

In the morning the Singles, Triples and Senior Fours played. There were some really good and close matches, particularly the singles tie involving Angus and Sufi Omari (Ayton). They played 28 ends of bowls with Angus eventually coming out on top 21-19.

The results in the morning were as follows: Singles - Chirnside beat Berwick; Duns Park beat Ayton. Triples - Eyemouth beat Chirnside; Ayton beat Spittal. Senior Fours - Chirnside beat Duns Park; Eyemouth beat Lauder.

In the afternoon the semi-finals of Junior Singles, Pairs and Fours took place. Again some very close matches were played, especially the fours tie between Gordon and Ayton where there were six burnt ends during the game! Gordon eventually came out on top on an extra end.

The afternoon results were: Junior Singles - Chrinside beat Spittal; Gordon beat Ayton. Pairs - Berwick beat Gordon; Tweedmouth beat Chirnside; Gordon beat Ayton; Berwick beat Tweedmouth.

After the raffle was drawn the finals commenced in brighter weather. The junior singles tie was a rather one sided affair with Callum Donaldson of Gordon BC defeating Joe Condy of Chirnside BC.

The singles, though, was a different story with Robert Patterson (Chirnside) playing Stuart Angus. It was a close game all the way through but Angus took the title, winning 21-18.

The pairs final was like the juniors tie, a rather one sided affair, with Berwick scoring heavily in the first half of the match to win the tie comfortably.

The triples final was won by Eyemouth BC who defeated Ayton BC. After a close start Eyemouth scored on the ninth, 10th and 11th end to gain a lead of around seven shots and they held out to win the match.

The fours were won by Gordon for the second year in a row, who were always ahead in the match and ran out comfortable winners.

The Senior Fours title went to the host club Eyemouth.who led early on and although it was a close game they held on to win the trophy.

President Dougal’s thanked Eyemouth for hosting the finals, in particular the ladies in the kitchen, the bar staff and also the green staff. He said that it was also good to see so many supporters there.
