SIR, - It is with deep regret that I find that the Duns British Legion club is closing.
I have many happy memories of the many social functions that were held there. My youngest daughter had her wedding reception there, what a great night. Who can forget all the dances, flower shows, dinner dances, darts and bowling competitions, ladies nights during Reivers Week, the list goes on.
Due perhaps to a sign of the times, people do not go out as much at weekends therefore clubs and pubs are suffering. This was very evident on Saturday past when one of the most talented six piece bands in the north of England appeared at the club. Unfortunately only 12 people turned up for the function.
When the club does close, unlike most of the other small villages surrounding Duns we do not have a new affordable village hall to cater for small to medium size functions. Perhaps if the Rugby Club relocates to the old high school they might consider a function suite as part of their building. I have been informed that the club will close on June 30, coincidentally the same date that Jim Douglas died.
