Longnewton Farm Fire at 7am as it lit up the darkness on 22nd January 2015

Due to several recent farm fires in Berwickshire and the Borders (like the one at Drakemyre, near Grantshouse, and the most recent one pictured above at Longnewton last week), the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind the local farming community of the following fire safety information:

Have a Fire Action Plan for staff, buildings and livestock; Have a current Fire Risk Assessment; Take safe and suitable safety measures regarding storage of all hazardous materials including fuels, oils, pesticides and fertilisers.

Such measures may include: Storage using clearly marked approved containers; Storage away from potential ignition sources such as machinery or electrics; Isolating and making secure all fuel sources when not in use; Maintaining good standards of security for all outbuildings and perimeter fencing. If a fire breaks out call the Fire and Rescue Service immediately.
