When he packed in his job at Sky to set up his own business Oliver Cowgill knew it was a gamble. One year on, he looks back with no regrets.
The 31-year-old audio-visual specialist believes the key to his success over the past 12 months or so was the decision to return to his home town of Berwick and offer his services on both sides of the border.
A former Currys salesman at Tweedmouth retail park, Oliver has always been a technology buff.
So installing and servicing equipment in homes and businesses, while working for himself, is the perfect fit. “I don’t see it as a job,” he says. “I see it more as a passion. I love working with technology. Technology is the future. I love telling people about new technology and explaining it to them.”
After Currys, Oliver’s next step was working for Sky all over the country. But after dreaming about running his own business, he took the plunge by setting up AV Specialists a year ago.
“It was a gamble. I was told by many ex-colleagues that it was a brave choice,” he recalls. “But it has been the best decision of my life.”
Oliver was living in Aberdeenshire at the time, but it was his decision to return to Berwick which made his new venture work.
“It has worked well because I know people in this area and people know me from my days at Currys,” he explains.
Oliver focuses on offering new products on the market to his customers. He is excited about his latest offering – a wifi-enabled multi-coloured light bulb that can be controlled using a smartphone.
Oliver explained: “I have a friend who is a wheelchair user. A normal light switch is too high, so it really works for him.”
The bulbs are powerful enough to light up an entire wall and give the room a glow, but are energy efficient too. “I choose green when watching football on TV,” he beamed. “It transforms the whole room.”
Oliver’s bright idea to set up his own business a year ago has transformed his life.
