Gypsy travellers who have been camped on Coldstream’s Leet Green for over two weeks have left the town, just two days before Civic Week begins.

Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland were initially told by the travellers they were staying for four days and were looking for work. Since then the numbers fluctuated.

Although Scottish Borders Council and the police were aware of the travellers, the travellers could not be served with an eviction notice until the ownership of the land was determined.

Scottish Borders Council’s spokesperson said: “The ownership of the land is currently being researched. We are not aware of any formal complaints being made directly to SBC but believe local councillors have been contacted.”
