Successful first year for Eyemouth Initiative

ALTHOugh they’ve only been going for less than a year, the Eyemouth Initiative have certainly had a positive impact on life in the coastal town, being instrumental in all areas of the community.

The Initiative was launched as a voluntary community group with the aim of to supporting, improving and promoting Eyemouth and its surrounding areas.

And its achievements so far make for impressive reading. They include:

·working with the Eyemouth & St Abbs Voluntary Marine Reserve on a series of Spring Clean days which started in March;

·liaising with other groups on the European Fisheries Fund FLAG funding;

·organising training for 10 people who completed a Social Enterprise Academy course and gathering data to support new employment and training initiatives;

·working with Eyemouth Community Council, the Chamber of Trade and Eyemouth & District Rotary to plan and implement a 2012 Christmas Event;

·working with Eyemouth Community Council and Chamber of Trade to improve the Christmas lights in the town for 2012;

·providing volunteers for the Ministry of Youth event last December;

·volunteering and supporting the Eyeskate Group’s annual Fireworks Display last November;

·initiating contact and supporting Impact Arts and Eyemouth Community Council to work together;

·being instrumental in restarting the Eyemouth and District Chamber of Trade last October.

The Initiative’s Treasurer, Anne McNeil, commented: “‘Eyemouth Initiative held a number of open evenings where we gathered the thoughts and ideas on what the local community felt would improve and promote the town.

“We have been working on developing these ideas through links with various organisations and are delighted with the progress we have made to date. We are at present working on our strategy to implement these changes and are taking care and time to make sure we have successful outcomes.

“Our next open meeting, which will be held within the next few weeks, will be to share full details of the various projects which have come from the suggestions from the community.”

The Initiative are holding a Fundraising Pub Quiz at The Tavern, Eyemouth tomorrow at 7pm £2 per person for teams of 2-5.

Membership of the Group is free and is open to everyone in Eyemouth and the surrounding district.
