SHANNON Hirst has been selected as the 2012 Greenlaw Maid.
The announcement was made at the very well attended Greenlaw Maid installation dance. There were 36 primary school aged children trying for the positions of usher and attendant this year proving that the festival is going strong. Congratulations go to those who have been selected to take part and commiserations to those who were unsuccessful.
This year’s festival principals are as follows:
Greenlaw Maid - Shannon Hirst; Herald - John Lamb; maid’s senior attendant - Karly Pike; P7 usher - Aden Smart, attendant - Megan Muir; P5/6 usher - Andrew Hume, attendant - Lauren Todd; P3/4 usher - Matthew Baker, attendant - Kirsten Denholm; P1/2 - Usher Ben Sharp, attendant – Melissa Foster.
Shannon was presented with her sash by current Maid Hannah Hay. Shannon has been a resident in Greenlaw for five years, attends Berwickshire High School and enjoys socialising and helping in the community.
Shannon will be crowned during the Greenlaw Festival on June 23 as part of the festival weekend which starts on Friday. June 22, and runs until Sunday, June 24.
Helen Johnston, chair of the Greenlaw Festival Trust said: “This year looks to be another fantastic festival with loads of events planned for the weekend. The committee now has a new junior section who are bringing in loads of energy and great ideas.
“We feel it is vital to the continuation of the festival that the youth of the village are involved.”
It’s going to be a busy summer for Greenlaw as the festival comittee are currently working on plans for a beacon on June 4 to celebrate the Jubilee, the Olympic torch coming through the village on June 14 and the two weeks running up to the festival will once again be filled with Doodecacathalon events starting with the Football Fun Fives taking place in the Happer Memorial Park on Sunday, June 10.
