Rural community council

Abbey St Bathans, Bonkyl & Preston Community Council is appealing for residents interested in being on the council to take part in its election process this month.

Returning officer Councillor Donald Moffat said: “Community councils are so important in rural areas like this. The outgoing community council has initiated many projects and initiatives in the area and has created an excellent base for the new council to build on. If anyone would like an informal chat about community council life, or would like a nomination form, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.”

There are 12 seats available on Abbey St Bathans, Bonkyl & Preston Community Council and residents in these communities who are on the electoral register have until 12 noon on Thursday, November 21, to put their name forward to become a community councillor.

A minimum of six valid nominations must be received for a new community council to be formed. Otherwise the community council will go into abeyance for six months, after which nominations can be called for again.

If between six and 12 valid nominations are received a new community council will be declared on November 28, and a meeting of the new council will be called. If more than 12 nominations are received there will be a ballot.

Nomination forms are available from Councillor Moffat by telephone on 0300 100 0220, email at dmoffat@scotborders.gov.uk or from Keld, Lennel Road, Coldstream TD12 4EW. Forms can also be downloaded from www.scotborders.gov.uk/communitycouncilelections.
