FOLLOWING the resignation of the subpostmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for the postal services use due to the expiry of the lease, Post Office Ltd have announced it will have to temporarily close Ayton Post Office on March 22.
Post Office Ltd apologise to customers for any inconvenience the closure will cause and assure them that it remains their intention to continue to provide a Post Office service in the community of Ayton.
Brian Turnbull, Field Change Advisor for Post Office Ltd said: “Regrettably, following the resignation of the subpostmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use due to the expiry of the lease, and despite our best efforts to maintain a Post Office counter service at this location, we have no other option but to temporarily close this branch on March 22.
“The provision of a Post Office® service to our customers in the local community is of paramount importance and it is therefore important that any future service is sustainable for the new subpostmaster and for Post Office Ltd.
“We will continue to review solutions to provide a Post Office service in the area as soon as possible.”
Customers are free to use the service most convenient for them, but two alternative Post Office branches in the area are the Eyemouth branch at 26 High Street, and the Reston branch, Country Store, Main Street, Reston. Post Office closures has been something of a sore point in the region with a number being closed by the Post Office Network as few years ago as part of a cost-cutting exercise.
