ALTHOUGH the weather at times did its best to dampen spirits for this year’s Eyemouth Herring Queen festival, it held off enough for revellers to enjoy a busy closing weekend packed full of activities for all ages.

The rain we’ve become accustomed to over the last month or so made its presence felt for the opening day of this year’s event, preventing this year’s Queen, Heather Smith and her court arriving at the harbour on board Eyemouth lifeboat ‘Barclay Crusader’ as others have done in the past.

However, the organising committee were determined that Heather wouldn’t miss out on this tradition completely and she and her court, including maids Alana Crowe, Zoe Holmes, Rebecca Mark and Kiera Robb took to the water last Saturday as everyone was getting ready for the closing night’s events.

She was accompanied by her very proud dad Terry Smith and two pipers from Eyemouth Pipe Band who piped her into the harbour where there was a large crowd waiting to greet her.

The cheering crowd was led by the retiring Queen Rachel Lauder and her court and the party then paraded along the harbour and the Bantry to present the prizes for events that had taken place throughout the week before the evening closed with a pyjama parade and firework display.

Herring Queen Committee member Wendy Lough, said Saturday was the perfect tonic for everybody after a wet first weekend, and that Heather certainly did everybody proud. She added that the committee had received great feedback about the new events they included in the 2012 programme.
