PVG training session planned for Borders

Thousands of people across Scotland are employed to work with children and protected adults in their day-to-day role.

None of us would want our loved ones to be in the care of someone who is known to have caused harm in the past. That’s why, as part of their safe recruitment processes, organisations and groups have staff and volunteers that work with vulnerable groups disclosure checked.

The Scottish Government has introduced a new system that will replace and improve upon the current disclosure service for people who work with vulnerable groups.

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme helps to ensure that those who work with children and protected adults don’t have a known history of harmful or abusive behaviour.

Alongside protecting members of the community, the new PVG Scheme is quick and easy to use. In particular it significantly reduces the need to complete a detailed application form every time a disclosure check is required, which is a frustration with the current system.

The PVG Scheme was introduced on February 28 and is expected to take four years to phase the whole vulnerable groups workforce onto scheme membership. Disclosure Scotland will provide more information about how this will be managed in due course.

If you work with vulnerable groups, in the majority of instances, your employer will advise you when you need to join the PVG Scheme.

To find out more about the new PVG Scheme and how it affects you, visit www.pvgschemescotland.org or call Disclosure Scotland on 0870 609 6006.

To help sports clubs and organisations in the Borders understand the changes and prepare for the new legislation a PVG training session has been organised for March 29, at 6.30pm at the Volunteer hall, St. John Street, Galashiels.

A representative from CRBS will give a presentation on the PVG outlining the implications for sports clubs and organisations. Children 1st will then be on hand to answer questions and take any queries back to CRBS. Each attendee will be given a pack of information to take back to their club about the PVG process.

This information evening is open to any sports club/organisation within the Borders. Spaces are limited so each club can only be allocated two attendees. For further infrmation ring 01896 759579 or 07801793349 or email rkenney@scotborders.gov.uk.
