BORDERS MP Michael Moore has welcomed news of a 10 year service arrangement between the Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd which will secure the future of local post offices.
Liberal Democrat Postal Services Minister Ed Davey said that the agreement will ensure that the full range of Royal Mail services, including stamps, parcels, airmail and special delivery will continue to be available over Post Office counters for the long term.
Michael Moore said: “Post Offices are a vital part of our communities here in the Borders as many local people use them every week to send letters, manage their finances or collect their pensions.
“After years of Post Office closures under the Labour Government, it is excellent news that Liberal Democrats are doing the right thing in Government and securing the Post Office’s future through this deal with Royal Mail.
“Labour left both the Royal Mail and the Post Office Network in a terrible mess and it is Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government who are working to put our local Post Offices on a stable footing.
“Through £1.34 billion of funding, the Coalition Government is committed to maintaining the Post Office network at its current size of around 11,500 branches.
“This is great news for Borderers and a huge boost for our local communities.”
