A living wage for Borders workers

All businesses in the Borders should become living wage accredited.

That is the view of Scottish Labour candidate for Ettrick Roxburgh and Berwickshire Barrie Cunning, who said: “The cost of living in the UK has gone up but wages have remained at an all-time low.

“Wage levels in the UK have been largely neglected which has affected thousands of Borderers and I want to see Border based companies become living wage accredited.”

“I have spoken to many businesses based in the Borders and most aspire to be a living wage employer, but it’s not enough to simply say I want to see all Border based companies become living wage accredited.

“I want to go one step further and say that if elected I will work with the council, Scottish Enterprise and other agencies to make the living wage a reality in the Borders but the only way we are going to be able to do that is to work with businesses and employers and acknowledge the cost involved and give businesses the support they need to enable them to pay the living wage - £8.25 per hour.”
