Police Scotland received two calls yesterday in relation to a male flagging down passing motorists, stating he required money for petrol.

The first call was in the Melrose area, the second in the Coldstream area.

The male is described as having dark hair, smartly dressed, wearing a shirt and blazer, and driving a dark car, possibly a BMW.

Both callers believed this behaviour to be suspicious.

This behaviour is similar to scams detailed across the UK where scammers claim they urgently need money for petrol and on some occasions they offer jewellery (which is worthless) in exchange for money.

If anything like this happens to you, politely close your window and continue on your journey.

If possible, take note of the car’s registration.

When you are safely away from the situation contact the police via 101.

If you feel threatened at any time in any way, contact the police immediately on 999.
