Police warn motorists over possible petrol scam

Police Scotland have received two calls in relation to a man flagging down motorists saying he required money for petrol. The first call was in the Melrose area, the second in the Coldstream area.

The man is described as having dark hair, smartly dressed wearing a shirt and blazer, driving a dark car, possibly a BMW.

Both callers believed this behaviour to be suspicious. This behaviour is similar to scams detailed across the UK where scammers claim they need money for petrol and on some occasions they offer jewellery (which is worthless) in exchange for money.

Drivers are being advised to politely close your window and continue on your journey. If possible take note of the cars registration. When safely away from the situation contact the police on 101. If you feel threatened contact police immediately on 999.
