a PETITION calling for local policing in the Scottish Borders has been launched by former Berwickshire MSP Euan Robson (Lib Dem), who is contesting theseat in the forthcoming Scottish Parliament elections.
Mr Robson’s petition calls on the Scottish Government to retain Lothian and Borders Police force and not to merge it into a single Scottish police force.
“There is little doubt that a single Scottish police force would threaten the sustainability of ‘G’ Division of Lothian and Borders Police which covers our area. Local policing would most likely give way to a centralised, call centre style service.
“No evidence has been produced to show that a single force would make our streets safer and even the claimed financial savings are in serious doubt.
“There is growing opposition to the stampede to a single force.
