Paxton author inspired by pre-war memories

Two new historical novels by Paxton based author Patricia F Payne are now available on Kindle and as paperbacks.

Patricia was evacuated to Ayton Castle during World War 2 along with Esdaile College, the Church of Scotland Ministers’ Daughters College, and after spending much of her adult life down in Warwickshire and Somerset she has returned to the eastern Borders.

She started writing fiction in middle age, discovering a problem she had had with books when she was growing up was down to undiagnosed dyslexia.

‘There Blew a Great Wind’ is inspired by Patricia’s memories of Holy Island, Lindisfarne Castle featuring on the book cover. Set in the 17th century, at the time of the death of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of King Charles II, Captain Hollinshaw is the commander of the parliamentary garrison on Columbsey, an island off the north east coast.

One night a great storm brings ship-wrecked men to the island, who have a dramatic impact on the hearts and lives of Captain Hollinshaw’s four daughters.

Patricia said: “‘There Blew a Great Wind’ was much influenced by memories of Holy Island as I remembered it, just pre World War Two. It was total heaven for children as a shorted of water meant we were discouraged from washing!”

The second book ‘Strong to Save’ is based in the Western Isles of Scotland. After years of caring for her father, Kay visits the Hebrides for a peaceful holiday. A peace that is shattered when she is shipwrecked and then falls for the man who rescued her.

A word of warning from Patricia - make sure when ordering that you remember to put the F in Patricia F Payne.

“There is another Patricia Payne out there who writes the sort of books I would never read, being educated at the Ministers’ Daughter College!

“Being mistaken for the other ‘PP’ has led to peculiar remarks and situations as you may imagine.”
