Seven members of Chirnside Amateur Boxing Club plunged into the new year with a bracing dip in the North Sea.

Raising money through sponsorship for Club funds, coaches Martin Wood and Michael Blaikie, boxer Stevie Williams, and Robert Donaldson of the Robin’s Nest, the club’s main sponsor, all braved the elements at Coldingham beach to welcome in 2012.

They were joined by junior members Ben Grant, Ewan Wilson and Keil Spouse, who accompanied them into the sea for moral support.

Having dived head first into the surf to cheers from the assembled throng, the seven brave wee soles couldn’t get back on dry land quick enough.

Once reunited with his towel, coach Michael seemed fairly unfazed by the experience: “When I got in my legs just froze, but I’m not cold now, apart from my feet,” he said. “The best way in is just run - if you don’t think about it then you’re fine.”

Sponsorship money is still coming in, with the final figure to be announced in due course.
