Aged 97, Henry McCreath has handed over the presidency of the oldest fishing club in the world to a mere youngster - 87-year-old Dr James Mitchell of Paxton.

Henry joined the Ellem Fishing Club in 1932 and to date is its longest serving active member.

At a presentation to Henry, Dr Mitchell thanked him for all that he had done to steer the club with wisdom, diplomacy and sound direction over the past 30 years. He praised Henry’s example to all club members in that he had been a very active president, taking part in all club activities. Dr Mitchell hoped that he would be an equally worthy president.

Dr Mitchell then presented Henry with a certificate marking his achievement. The club has decided to keep Henry involved as honorary vice president.

Henry thanked the leadership of the club, its chairmen and council members over the years and its secretary. He said that the club was in a very healthy state and hoped that the younger members would rise to the challenge of keeping the it going.
