New card scam claims victims

Lothian and Borders Police are warning people to avoid falling victim to a scam that has claimed a number of victims.

Over the past three months, a group of criminals have been targeting elderly people across Scotland, including one woman in East Lothian, making contact with the victims by telephone or email and advising them that their debit/credit card details are either faulty or about to expire.

They then persuade the victim, through various means, to divulge their passwords and in some cases their PIN numbers

A police spokesperson said: “The culprits can be very persistent, calling up to 20 to 30 times a day, and they are very convincing during calls - the victims are often not aware that they have divulged information that will ultimately lead to the removal of funds from their account.”
