Three Duns men completed the challenging Mongolian Charity Rally this year, raising £4,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

When John Walker and Paul Liddell, both 23, and Max Redpath, 20, started planning the 10,000-mile trip from London to Mongolia, offers of support and help from all around flooded in.

Six days into the adventure, it looked like it was all over for the trio when their engine broke down and a replacement was needed. An SOS call home to their parents, however, resulted in a new engine being quickly conditioned and shipped over to Germany, and they carried on their way .

John, Paul and Max funded the trip themselves and are very grateful to friends and businesses, including Aitken-Walker Cars and Redpath Tyres, for their suupport.

Paul said: “We kept our wits about us all the time, but we never felt like we were in any danger, except perhaps when we were in our tent in Bosnia and heard gunshots.”

“We decided to support Macmillan because we all know someone who has been affected by cancer,” added John.

“People throughout the whole route were so friendly and helpful. We couldn’t have asked for better.

“At the end, we donated our car to a local Mongolian family. They reacted like they had won the lottery.”
