Scottish Borders Council’s armed forces and veterans champion John Greenwell took full advantage of running into the Secretary of State for Defence at the Conservative Party conference in Glasgow last Friday.

After speaking to Sir Michael Fallon about a number of issues, Mid Berwickshire councillor Mr Greenwell told us: “As the Armed Forces & Veterans Champion at SBC it was an opportunity not to be missed when I found myself able to highlight the plight of our veterans in the Borders.

“They are suffering from various effects from their service in the Armed Forces, specifically PTSD and the impact this has on family life.

“Although Sir Michael was very sympathetic and was able to reassure me that funding and support is available, he made it very clear that the delivery of this is down to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the service charities they support.

“If that support is not readily available through these channels, then I should be asking them why the Borders is missing out.

“He also put my mind at rest that the practise of hounding veterans by unscrupulous lawyers for unfounded allegations of war crimes is a thing of the past,” added Councillor Greenwell.
