Police have named the pedestrian who was killed when he was hit by an ambulance on the A1 near Haggerston on Tuesday.

The man killed in the collision was Eric Shaw, 70, from the Mablethorpe area of Lincolnshire.

The ambulance was travelling south when it collided with a pedestrian near Haggerston at 6.52pm on Tuesday, October 29. Mr Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene.

Motor patrols Sgt Jason Ryder said: “There were a number of people who stopped at the incident and tried to help and I want to thank them for their assistance.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened and we are still keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision.

“We know that Mr Shaw had travelled on the Arriva X15 bus from Alnwick to Berwick and got off at the Haggerston A1 stop. We want to speak to anyone who was on that bus and who saw anything that could help us with our enquiries.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr Shaw at this difficult time.”
