The Maltings in Berwick has secured a capital lottery award from Arts Council England to transform its facilities for live performances and film.

This is part of the venue’s on-going programme of ambitious capital development, also funded through additional investment by Northumberland County Council.

Lottery funding of £141,608 will be used to future-proof the venue’s technical infrastructure, ensuring that England’s most northerly venue will become one of the best-equipped small scale venues in the country.

Matthew Rooke, chief executive and artistic director of The Maltings said: “This is about ensuring The Maltings can plan for its next 25 years in the most ambitious way we can through a complete step-change in how we operate technically – with the best facilities and the very latest technology.

“We can re-shape how we use the different venues to increase the range of work we have in our programme, and appeal to an even wider cross-section of the general public. I am particularly pleased that this new technology will enable us to offer more opportunities to people with disabilities.

“Not all of the changes will be immediately obvious when you walk through our front door, but we are absolutely confident that the transformed quality of every performance and screening will be a massive hit with audiences and with artists.”

From this summer, The Maltings will have a second digital sound and ‘big screen’ projection facility, allowing films to be screened in its second studio space. This builds on the hugely successful introduction of a digital screening system into its main theatre space three years ago.
