Traditional Burns Supper returns to Berwickshire High

Berwickshire High School Burns Supper

The first Burns Supper to be held at Berwickshire High School for a number of years was a night to remember for all who took part.

The hall looked fabulous and the guests did too, with a large showing of tartan in evidence.

Chairman for the evening, Jack Fleming, kept proceedings moving along nicely, with musical items from Alex Prentice, Scott Turnbull, Maddie Cawthorn and Mr Playfair, and Burns poems from Robert Cooper, Brian Mulhern and Kirsten Cowe, interspersing the traditional speeches of the night.

The Selkirk Grace, given by deputy head boy Daniel McCann, was followed by the piping in of the haggis by Rory Hamilton, Danny Sanders giving a stirring rendition of the Address to the Haggis.

The food, prepared by the school’s catering staff and ably served by senior pupils, was delicious: haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by cranachan ice cream, with coffee, shortbread and tablet to follow.

A memorable Immortal Memory was delivered by retired head of heath and well-being, David Douglas; head boy Oliver Smith gave a very entertaining Toast to the Lassies, which was more than matched by head girl Emily Lerpiniere’s Reply from the Ladies. The evening rounded off with a vote of thanks by deputy head girl, Heather Wilson, and the traditional singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne’.
