Five Scottish Borders Council officials are taking early retirement as the council reduces the number of senior posts.
Applications for early retirement from the council’s director of education and lifelong learning (Glenn Rodger), acting director of social work (Stella Everingham), head of corporate governance (Ian Wilkie), head of transformation projects (Henry Thompson) and head of neighbourhood services (Ray Beard) were unanimously approved by councillors last week.
Another two members of staff were unsuccessful.
Last month director of social work, Andrew Lowe, announced his intention to retire due to ill health.
The changes are part of a restructuring of the council’s corporate management team reducing it by 40%: directors posts reducing from four to two, and heads of service posts reducing from 19 to 12 service director posts.
The authority will save £507,051 per year, meaning redundancy and early retirement costs will be recovered in little over 12 months.

David Parker, council leader, added: “We are moving towards a more flexible senior management structure which will allow additional investment in a number of operational posts to support the delivery of public services.
