After being shocked into action by some unflattering holiday photos, a Coldingham woman shed over four stone and is now starting a new life abroad.
And rather ironically she has upped sticks to the place where the shots that upset her so much were taken.
Mary-Jane Ferris was a familiar face to the people of Dunbar and the surrounding area due to her 16 year stint as a health visitor but spending her days in her car and on people’s couches carrying out her rounds meant she got little exercise.
And when Mary-Jane returned from what should have been a dream trip to the Bahamas that she found looking at holiday pictures to be an absolute nightmare.
“I’d been overweight since puberty – growing up at a time when you finished what was on your plate!” she said.
“As a health visitor, I’d spend my days driving around and then sitting in people’s houses, with no thought of exercise or eating properly myself!
“I had tried dieting many years ago and had been slimmer but it was not until I saw how I looked in a swim suit and began to feel breathless climbing stairs that I knew I should do something.
“Someone from Scottish Slimmers came into the health centre to give a talk and I decided to join.”
Prior to biting the weight loss bullet 5’4 Mary -Jane weighed 15 stones, 1lb but now weighs 10 stone 7lbs and has dropped in dress size from a 22 to a 12.
And not content with going back to the Bahamas to get an ‘after’ shot in the same spot the picture she could barely bring herself to look at was taken, a rejuvenated Mary-Jane moved there at the end of last year.
“I look like a different person and I feel like one too,” she enthused.
“You don’t know how restricting being overweight is until you’re not anymore. My advice to anyone considering losing weight is not put it off- begin the rest of your life!”
