Farewell to Bedroom tax

The under occupancy reduced housing benefit - bedroom tax - is effectively coming to an end in Scotland.

Over 1000 Borders households have been affected by the so called bedroom tax, which means they lose part of their housing benefit if they have more bedrooms in their home than they need. Almost 100 Berwickshire Housing Association tenants were caught up in the new benefit rules and for 65 of them the impact was lessened when they received Discretionary Housing Payment from Scottish Borders Council to make up the difference.

The Discretionary Housing Payments are paid by the Scottish Government to councils who then pay out to tenants where a case has been made for the additional benefit to be received.

There is a UK Government cap on how much discretionary housing payments can be added to council funds but last week the Scottish Government agreed to provide financial support to the scheme even in the UK Government refuse to lift the cap.
