The Queen’s Baton Relay set off from Buckingham Palace this week to travel the Commonwealth before arriving in Scotland in 2014 at the Commonweath Games.
Local people will have an opportunity to carry the baton when it arrives in Scotland in June next year on its way to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on July 23, 2014.
Nominations for baton bearers opened today (October 10) and you have until November 22 to nominate people to take part.
All Scotland’s secondary schools will have at least one baton bearer and in the Borders the nomination process will be through Scottish Borders Council’s director of education and head teachers.
The lucky ones chosen, 14 per cent of baton bearers will be school pupils. will be selected in February/March next year and the emphasis is very much on sport, youth and community.
Organisers are looking for people who have: made a positive contribution to the lives of others; done voluntary work; contributed to schools or youth organisations; contributed to improved inclusion for disadvantaged or marginalised sectors of community; has been a role model or mentor to youth through sport; displayed individual achievement against the odds; made significant contribution to local community.
