She created a diamond of a design for the Queen’s Jubilee last year and now Heather Gibson has received more royal recognition for her handiwork.
Buoyed by her letter of thanks from Buckingham Palace last year for her cross stitch sampler to mark HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne, Heather couldn’t help but get back to the drawing board after Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, revealed her pregnancy towards the end of last year.
A keen royalist, Heather was in no doubt about what to focus her design on and chose a much loved British character with a connection to Prince William.
“I decided to go with a Beatrix Potter theme for two main reasons; one because her works are British classics and because Prince William himself had a Beatrix Potter theme in his nursery when he was a baby.
“I also thought that it would be a design that would be suitable for either a girl or boy.
“Obviously I didn’t know the baby’s gender when I started the cross stitch.”
A lover of cross stitch since the age of four, Heather is known for staying up into the wee small hours working on her cross stitch designs and she had her present for Prince George nearly finished well before the news addition to the Royal family came into the world at London’s St Mary’s Hospital on July 22.
“It didn’t take me too long at all to do,” Heather explained.
“I started not long after Kate made the announcement and I was pretty much done within a few weeks.
“Like everyone else I was glued to the television once Kate had gone into labour and once they’d named him I was able to add George’s name to the sampler and send it off.”
Heather posted her present to the new Prince and his parents a week after the birth and was shocked to receive a letter of thanks from William and Kate just over a month later.
The letter thanked Heather for her “thoughtful gift” adding that the Duke and Duchess were left “overwhelmed” by all the messages and presents they’d received.
“I was never expecting to get a reply so soon.
“But just like the one I got from the Queen’s household last year, it was fantastic to receive.
“As new parents I expect William and Kate have been very busy.”
