Consultation on Scottish Borders Council’s plans to transfer libraries, halls and museums to a trust will begin now they have agreed the way forward.
Meetings will be held with all community centre management committees involved (which includes Souhtfield at Duns and Chirnside centre).
A full business case for the new organisation and the services to be included in the transfer is being drawn up, to be taken back to council in August 2014 with a view to the trust being launched by October 2015.
As well as being the best way forward to retain library, halls and museum services at their current level, the change to a trust also has to contribute towards a savings target of £406k by 2015/16.
Councillor Vicky Davidson, executive member for culture, sport, youth and communities said the council’s cultural services provide a range of important community services adding: “I welcome the council’s approval to take forward proposals that offer the best solution for securing their long term future.
“In addition, the Culture Trust option has the potential to draw in new sources of funding and this added investment will be of significant benefit for all the people who use these buildings and services.”
