Nominations opened last Tuesday for five new community councillors for Gavinton, Fogo and Polwarth Community Council under the new constitution adopted on Monday August 4.
Notices have been posted inviting residents to put their names forward as candidates. Outgoing chairman, John Marjoribanks, said: “This is a real opportunity for change. The chairman and former chairman are both leaving the community council. We are looking for five new members who can make a real difference to our community.”
The new constitution calls for 10 members to represent the whole community council area as the old subdivisions have been dropped. It also lowers the age limit for nomination from 18 to 16.
Five current members are not due for election this year, which means that the other five places are up for grabs. Two other current members are co-opted and are likely to stand for election.
Anyone who would like to be a candidate can obtain a nomination form from the Returning Officer, Councillor Frances Renton (1 Rashie, Fogo, Duns TD11 3RA; email firstname.lastname@example.org) or pick one up from the porch of Gavinton Village Hall.
Nominations close at noon on Tuesday, August 19. After that, there’s a seven day period when nominees can decide whether they really want to serve on the community council or would like to withdraw. If the number of valid nominations after this period is more than five, the Returning officer will publish arrangements for an election to take place in the first week of September.
The first meeting of the new community council is scheduled for Monday, September 8, when a new chairman will be elected.
