After defying the odds by completing a sponsored walk less than two years after a life-changing accident, a Duns couple have made The Difference.
Maureen and Steven Matthews were casually walking to a cash point on Melrose High Street in December 2012 when a car reversed onto them, pinning them against a wall.
They were both rushed to hospital in a very serious condition and although stabilised both lost a leg as a result of their injuries.
Life for them since then has been very different but they haven’t let their disability dampen their determination.
After learning to walk again the couple stunned friends and family by revealing their plans to do a sponsored walk.
And true to their word they completed the walk in July from Gavinton football pitch to their new home in Station Court.
More miraculously Maureen managed to walk the last few steps of the walk without her sticks, prompting an outpouring of emotion from her friends and son Robert.
Their courageous task saw them raise £3,446 for The Difference, a charity whose aim is to improve patient care in Borders health facilities.
The Difference’s fundraising officer, Morven Patterson commented: “We are tremendously proud of Maureen for this personal achievement which has also raised significant funds for The Difference.
“Maureen has chosen to donate to the BGH General Fund and the money that they have raised will contribute to enhancements to patient care throughout the hospital. We are very grateful for the donation.”
The Difference isn’t the only cause Steve and Maureen are raising money for.
One of their first public ventures after leaving hospital was to Berwick Rangers and to thank the club for the support they gave them that day the couple have organised a club fundraiser at the Black & Gold for Saturday, October 4.
The night will include a performance from World Champion and European Elvis Tribute star Johnny Lee Memphis, a disco and raffle.
