Motorists are reminded that the Blackadder Bridge on the A6112 Swinton to Duns road will be closed from next week for up to eight weeks.
This week there have been temporary traffic controls on the bridge, on the Mount Pleassant to Duns section of the road as the scaffolding has gone up and masonry repair and refurbishment works will be carried out once an assessment of the damage has been made.
The main part of the repair work starts on Monday, March 3, and because of the extent of the work that needs to be done the bridge will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the main programme, with diversion routes in operation throughout the closure period.
The programme of work will see the deteriorating masonry spandrel wall on the downstream side of the bridge taken down and strengthened. Repairs will also be done to the bridge following accident damage.
It is expected to take about eight weeks but that depends on what needs done once work gets underway.
Councillor Gordon Edgar, Scottish Borders Council’s executive member for roads and infrastructure, said: “We appreciate that the closure will result in significant inconvenience to local residents, businesses and road users in general and apologise in advance.
“However, this is an important programme of works and the council requests public co-operation during the closure period.”
Motorists will need to allow extra time for journeys that would normally involve the A6112, to take into account the diversion.
