The Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale the Hon. Gerald Maitland-Carew presented the British Empire Medal (BEM) to Thomas Tokely.

Yetholm’s Thomas Tokely was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale the Hon. Gerald Maitland-Carew at a ceremony in the Council Chamber in Newtown St Boswells on Wednesday, March 19.

Mr Tokely was awarded the BEM in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for voluntary service to the community of Yetholm. He has chaired the community council and the festival committee and founded the Romany Ramblers walking group. He was also a football referee for more than 20 years and a church elder for 50 years.

When the award was announced in January Mr Tokely commented: “I feel quite proud. I have always been interested in the village and felt I had to do something for the village.”

The Lord Lieutenant said: “I was delighted to make this award of the British Empire Medal to Mr Tokely. To anyone including the young and elderly he has always been available with advice and help well beyond the call of duty. He richly deserved this recognition for his unstinting service over many years to Yetholm.”
