Wind turbines just keep on coming
GORDON residents will have the opportunity to find out details of a 21 turbine wind farm being considered at Corsbie Moor, west of the village.
E.on UK Renewables put in a scoping opinion request to Scottish Borders Council on August 23, this year, and followed it up last week with a Proposal of Application notice indicating they would be holding two public events this autumn - at Earlston and Lauder to let local people know the details.
E.on also say they will be contacting every community council whose area is within or adjoins the land, south west of Hyndsidehill Farm which includes Gordon and Westruther Community Council.
The wind farm would produce more than 20mw of energy and would therefore be classed as a major development, and as such new planning regulations require that members of the public are informed about the proposals and full consultation takes place before the planning application is submitted to Scottish Borders Council.
A newsletter is to be distributed to nearby communities; and monthly updates about the project have been promised by E.on who also indicate that a web page will be devoted to the Corsbie Moor site.
Further east, the first steps are being taken to see if conditions are conducive at Old Cambus Quarry, Cockburnspath for a future single wind turbine there.
Last week George F White LLP put in a planning application to Scottish Borders Council on behalf of R & K Drysdale, for the siting of an anemometer mast for up to two years to the east of Old Cambus Quarry on an area of rough pasture.
The land surrounding the application has previously been quarried but is now largely restored.
In the application George F White state: "Old Cambus Quarry Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is located approximately 430 metres to the west of the application site and Siccar Point SSSI approximately 150m to the north of the application site.
"Both SSSIs are designated for their geological interest and Scottish Natural Heritage have confirmed that there would be no detrimental impact on the SSSIs through the positioning of a wind turbine of 37m to hub on the application site.
The nearest houses are over 730m away from the proposed site and the applicants say that no heavy machinery would be required for the construction of the mast. The ancient monument of St Helen's Church is a similar distance away, as is Dean Castle Fort, another ancient monument which the applicants describe as being "largely non-existent, having been subject to previous quarry workings".
The application concludes: "The applicant is taking positive steps to minimise their reliance on non-renewable energy."
