Westruther is blooming lovely
Westruther were among the winners at this year's Floral Gateway awards
RESIDENTS in Westruther are celebrating after the village was successful in this year’s Floral Gateway competition.
The event, run by Scottish Borders Council, is always keenly contested by communities throughout the region and Westruther ruled the roost in the Wee Village category, beating off competition from the likes of Whitsome, Hume, Auchencrow and Burnmouth who occupied 4th-8th positions.
Another category with strong Berwickshire representation was Small Village, with Ayton finishing in the runners-up spot. Coldingham was third, Reston sixth and Gordon eighth.
In the Champions category Coldstream and Greenlaw were both highly commended; Eyemouth were fourth in the Town section in its first year of competing and Chirnside third in Large Village.
Commenting on the competition, Councillor David Paterson, executive member for environmental services, said: “As always the standard of entries was incredibly high.
“Through the Floral Gateway Competition, SBC continues to support our local communities in taking an active role in improving their local environment. I offer my congratulations to all the towns and villages who took part this year and, of course, to all of the category winners.”
Jason Hedley, SBC Neighbourhood Area Manager added: “Our thanks go not only to all of the entrants for their hard work, but also to the judges who gave up their time.
“The competition simply could not take place without their continued support.”
