Visitors ‘fall’ for Scottish Borders this autumn

AUTUMNAL short breaks in the Borders are being promoted as part of the national tourism organisation’s latest seasonal push.

A VisitScotland direct mail campaign highlights the natural beauty of the Scottish Borders offering ideas of things to see and do and targeting more than 42, 000 homes within drivetime of the region, including people who live in Central Scotland and Northern England.

History and heritage, walking, cycling, wildlife, and food and drink with a focus on local produce are also mentioned in the colourful insert which is part of VisitScotland’s Surprise Yourself campaign. The destination promotion also includes mention of the region’s gardens, coastline and festivals, encouraging people to order a destination guide, search for more information on www.visitscotland.com/explore and choose from the special offers now available.

A print media advertising and radio campaign encouraging people to visit the Scottish Borders is also underway and promotional partners have been set up with both national outdoor clothing company - Regatta- as well as Wheelies, a major retailer of bikes and bike accessories, that aligns well with the wealth of cycling opportunities the region has to offer.

Councillor Stuart Bell, Scottish Borders Council’s executive member for economic development said; “Autumn is the perfect time to visit the Scottish Borders. Visitors can pack a fishing rod and head for the River Tweed, or get out into the countryside to explore some of the 1500km of walking trails and cycling routes. It’s a great time to see historic castles and country estates in stunning autumn colours, and to sample some local food and experience a genuine Borders’ welcome.”

Paula McDonald, regional director for VisitScotland, said; “Autumn is a fantastic time to visit the Scottish Borders and our latest campaign will show of the region’s best assets, encouraging people to find out more information and book a break in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland.”
