GYMNASTICS has always been a sport which has attracted more girls than boys.

But now, Berwick Gymnastics Club are hoping to redress the balance slightly by trying to attract more young males through their doors.

And one of the ways of doing this is through specialist funding which has been made available to them from the sport’s governing body.

A four-week taster course in freestyle gymnastics was launched at the Swan Centre at the weekend.

And organiser Debbie Couch is hoping that the raw brand of urban activities will help bring more boys to the club.

“Gymnastics is growing in popularity all the time, even more so with the success of the British team at the 2012 London Olympics,” said Debbie.

“Freestyle gymnastics is a rapidly growing activity which incorporates aspects of other ‘street’ activities such as parkhour, free running and urban gymnastics.

“These are all styles which we think might make the sport a little bit more attractive to young boys, which is why we are running the course.”

The course started on Sunday (January 13), when a number of freestyle experts went through their paces, and will continue for the next three weeks (January 20, 27 and February 3).

It is open to anyone aged 12 and over and the funding from British Gymnastics means the cost has been kept down to only £1.50 for the one and a half hour sessions which are held between 12 noon and 1.30pm.

A course for recreational gymnastics for beginners (aged from five plus years) is also being held in conjunction with this between 1.30-3pm.
