Uncle inspires Whitsome girls to raise cash for Help for Heroes charity

TWO young Whitsome entrepreneurs have been busy raising money for the Help for Heroes charity.
Jemima and Mellissa Smith, from Whitsomehill, were inspired by their Uncle Rob going off to Afghanistan, to help raise money for the charity Help for Heroes with a sale of toys, books and gifts at Whitsomehill Ark.
The enterprising girls aged eight and seven came up with the idea all on their own and raised a fantastic total of £53.73 having set up an impromptu charity shop in the village hall.
Jemima and Melissa decided on Help for Heroes to support their Uncle Rob - Major Robert Connolly originally from the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and now with the renamed 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland - who goes on tour to Afghanistan in just a few days time.
Uncle Rob, also a resident of Whitsomehill, who will be based with the UN in Kabul this summer, was amazed by their enthusiasm and ingenuity, as were dozens of passersby’s from the local community who browsed the gifts on offer and generously donated to the charity.
Jemima said: “I would like to thank everyone who gave donations and I hope they enjoy the gifts they bought from us.
“We were playing a pretend game we call ‘Shopkeepers’ the day before in our bedroom when we came up with the idea.
“It turned out to be great fun and a busy morning thanks to the ballet classes taking place in the village hall!”
Co-entrepreneur Melissa added: “It was fantastic to do something for a good cause and we are very proud of our Uncle Rob.
“We searched our rooms and the garage and came up with boxes of old toys, books, cuddly animals, DVD’s, bathroom soaps, bits and bobs.
“Thank you to everyone who bought gifts and those who kindly made donations. Fund-raising is more like fun-raising.”
