Two rescued from drifting fishing boat

DUNBAR’S RNLI Lifeboat had a midnight call out on Saturday to a former fishing boat that had lost all power and electrics and was making water.

The 14 metre Jackie Dee had broken down on passage from Charlestown in Fife to the north of Scotland.

The two man crew on board, believed to be on a delivery charter, tried for several hours to fix the vessel before raising the alarm as they realised they had drifted miles down the coast into the sea lane of the Firth of Forth.

Lifeboat coxswain Gary Fairbairn said: “The boat was about 11 miles from Torness when the coastguard asked us to help. When we got on scene an ocean going tug, the BB Troll, was lying nearby in case the crew had to abandon ship.

“The tug skipper kindly kept the Jackie Dee sheltered from the wind as we put a couple of our crew on board to pump out the boat and see if there was anything that could be done to restart her.

“In the end we had to tow the boat back to Dunbar harbour with our crew on board assisting and it was 5am before we got back to Torness and refuelled.”

The coxswain and crew were back on the lifeboat a few hours later when they took part in Dunbar’s annual Remembrance Day service and parade.
