Torness reactor under maintenance

A REACTOR at Torness Power Station is undergoing a longer than usual maintenance operation.

It was shut down for its regular three-yearly maintenance ‘outage’ in May, when an in-service inspection (ISI) standpipe at the top of the reactor was found to require some repair work. This means that the reactor will be down for longer than the usual six to eight weeks.

As well as carrying out planned maintenance, a detailed inspection of the plant takes place during a shutdown, with around 500 extra staff brought in.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation has been fully informed as always and is working closely with the plant.

A similar issue previously occurred at Heysham Power Station, sister station to Torness, and their experience will inform procedure at Torness. Paul Winkle, station director at Torness, said: “One of the key areas of our planned shutdowns is to carry out detailed inspections, which allows us to effectively deal with these types of issues.”
