AFTER three of their number required treatment at the Sick Kids Hospital over the course of the past year or so, the parents and children of Bump to Bairns playgroup in Eyemouth have raised in excess £1400 for the invaluable facility.

The group made it their mission to raise money for a worthy cause last year and after a trio of youngsters required to go to Edinburgh for various operations, their decision was made much easier.

The staff and facilities of Sick Kids really struck a chord with volunteer Sarah Maltman after her baby daughter Levi had to spend Christmas 2011 in Edinburgh after contracting the respiratory syncytial virus (RVS) which then took a nasty turn and developed into pneumonia.

Thankfully Levi is now a bright, happy toddler but Sarah said it was a worrying time for all the family.

“Nobody wants to be in hospital on Christmas Day but the staff made it much more bareable,” she told ‘The Berwickshire’.

“Levi got the infection really, really bad and it was awful seeing her lying there with lots of wires stuck to her ay just a few weeks old.

“But the nurses really put us at ease and put us up in family accomodation. We were really grateful for all of their help.”

Fellow mums Crystal Young and Sarah Colvine are also indebted to the Sick Kids Hospital for their support. Crystal’s son required reconstructive surgery and Sarah’s son Riley had to go in for an operation after an abnormality was discovered during a six week check up.

But just like the Bump to Bairns mums have an immense amount of gratitude to the hospital and its staff, the Sick Kids Foundation are eternally grateful for the donations from community groups.

“It’s vital that groups like Bump to Bairns fundraise for us,” explained Sick Kids community fundraising manager Rachel McKenzie.

“We don’t get any government funding so we rely on donations.”

Bumps and Bairns raised £670 through the sale of Christmas cards and a coffee morning and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped them.
