Technical students up to the challenge

Eyemouth young technologists representing the school at a Rotary competition in Mussleburgh

LAST Wednesday a team of Eyemouth High School S2 students represented their school in the Rotary Young Technologists competition held at MusselburghGrammar School.

The task as always was challenging, each team had to design and construct a powered vehicle using only the wheels, wood, string, elastic bands and cylindrical weight provided. The finished vehicle had to be capable of climbing a sloped roadway under its own power.

The test proved to be challenging for all age groups, even the senior judge (a retired civil engineer) had to admit that when he received the brief and component list he had great difficulty constructing a vehicle capable of completing the test.

However, 17 teams of students from seven high schools covering Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced age groups, were up to the challenge.

The Eyemouth team competing in the Foundation section were, Elizabeth Edmondson, Wictoria Borodavkina, Roddy Blackie and Tom Nisbet, supported by their technology teacher Mr Paulin and Eyemouth Rotary Club president Jo Pawley.

They acquitted themselves splendidly, worked well as a team and constructed a vehicle that was undoubtedly the moral victor, it did travel the furthest but the design had gone a little, off brief, which lost them marks in the judging process.

Rotary president Jo, Pawley said: “I was absolutely amazed at the skill level, teamwork and determination shown by our team on what was a very difficult challenge. But more importantly they all told me that they had relished the task, enjoyed the day and would be happy to compete again, scoring the experience 10 out of 10 on their feedback form.”
